Separation By Karat Fineness

Calculating the value of your scrap gold involves four steps. First, determine the market price of gold. It is typically listed as a dollar amount per troy ounce. One troy ounce is equal to 31.1 grams. In order to convert the market price to grams, divide it by 31.1.

For example, suppose gold is selling at $800 per troy ounce. Dividing $800 by 31.1 yields 25.724. Therefore, each gram is worth $25.72.

The second step is to identify the multipliers by karat fineness. Because the market price is based on 24k pure gold, items with less purity must use the following multipliers:

10 karat = 10/24 =.4167

14 karat = 14/24 =.5733

18 karat = 18/24 =.7500

The third step is to multiply the market price by the appropriate multiplier for each group. For example, using our $800 per troy ounce market price, a 14k piece would be worth $14.75 (or, $25.72 x 0.5733) per gram.

The fourth and last step involves multiplying the aggregate weight of each group of items (separated by karat fineness) by the value per gram.
